Detecting structural changes induced by Heterobasidion root rot on Scots pines using terrestrial laser scanning

چکیده

Abstract Root rot, caused by the decay fungus Heterobasidion annosum, damages both below- and above-ground parts of Scots pines (Pinus Sylvestris L.). The diseased are often first characterized deteriorated crowns they will eventually be killed infection, but process is gradual difficult to observed before symptoms severe. We tested applicability point cloud data produced terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for quantifying structural differences between healthy trees. This approach was applied in a mature pine stand southern Finland, which known infected H. annosum. scanned using TLS, thereafter felled trees detailed inspection classification infection status. From TLS cloud, we estimated i) crosscut areas within lowest 1 m stem, identifying potential deformations initiated fungus, ii) degree crown deterioration, providing visual signs at level individual trees, iii) occupancy open space around prone altered mycelial spread adjacent results indicate that stem dimensions deterioration can detected were found have more swollen butt, no irregularities circularity crosscuts detected. In terms vertical distribution, had accumulations substantially greater heights, reflecting easier penetration beams sparsity crown. Regarding occupancy, their crowns, difference not statistically significant. According simple prediction test based on calculated features, up 85% accuracy status reached. study indication successfully detecting changes connected root rot. Our also show evidence annosum causes butt swelling, has rarely been reported as symptom pines.

Detecting morphology changes due to oyster reefs in a tidal basin using Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Several programs have been written to process laser scan data from two shoals in the Netherlands. The first makes a grid of heights, the second calculates deformations and makes plots. The third utilises a variogram to obtain information about the amplitude, direction and wavelength of tidal ripples, which are processed and plotted by a fourth program. Six scans have been made in order to compa...

Detecting Changes in Forest Structure over Time with Bi-Temporal Terrestrial Laser Scanning Data

Changes to stems caused by natural forces and timber harvesting constitute an essential input for many forestry-related applications and ecological studies, especially forestry inventories based on the use of permanent sample plots. Conventional field measurement is widely acknowledged as being time-consuming and labor-intensive. More automated and efficient alternatives or supportive methods a...

Describing Forest Stands Using Terrestrial Laser-scanning

A method for extracting forest parameters is described in this paper. The 3D point clouds derived from phase difference laser scanners in forests were processed in a step-wise separation. The first step contains basic filter methods to reduce raw data which, separates isolated points or deletes those artefacts resulting from the ambiguity problem. The next step includes using algorithms to isol...

Detecting Fire Damaged Concrete Using Laser Scanning

Concrete is the single most widely used building material throughout the UK and the world. A major advantage of properly designed concrete construction is its inherent resistance to the effects of unwanted fires. The detection and location of structural deficiencies in buildings is of vital importance from a health and safety point of view. In some cases the damage to these materials is easy to...

Heterobasidion root rot in forests on former agricultural lands in Poland: Scale of threat and prevention

This paper describes the specifics of forests on former farmlands in Poland and their protection as well as preventive measures taken. The review refers to polish literature on the threat by root rot caused by Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. to pine and spruce plantations established on postagricultural lands on an area of more than 1400 000 ha. In Europe, the latter presents an outstanding ...
